The Girona Costa Brava Airport is commonly known as the Barcelona Girona Airport, although it is not actually inside Barcelona. This airport has an International Air Transport Association airport code of GRO and an International Civil Aviation Organization airport code of LEGE. The airport is located around 12 kilometres from the city of Girona and is a two hour drive away from Barcelona.
This airport first became popular when Ryanair introduced the Girona airport as one of its European destinations. Today, the Girona Airport is used by many budget travellers as a way to visit the city of Barcelona and destinations in Catalonia.
Girona Airport mainly caters to cheap flights as there has been a recent increase in the number of budget airlines in Europe and this is now one of the fastest growing airports in Spain. There are flights from the
Girona airport to a number of destinations across Europe, with a total of 11 airlines that use this airport for their base. The most important of these is of course, Ryanair.
Apart from the airlines that use Girona airport as their hub, several other airlines also work in the Barcelona Girona airport. These include Air Malta, LOT Polish, Jetair Fly, Transavia France and British Midland Airways.
Girona Airport is well connected to the city, and travellers will be able to take a bus or taxi from here to Barcelona. The airport also has a large parking facility and lockers that travellers can make use of.
