Religious Festivals in Barcelona, Spain
As with many European countries, religion plays a huge part in the Barcelona culture. Any religious events are a big issue here where people go out of their way to make a special effort to celebrate them. Below are some of the religious events in Barcelona which occur each year and are worth paying a visit to.
Festa de Santa Eulàlia
Saint Eulalia is the patron saint of Barcelona, indeed his crypt can be found in the city’s cathedral. This event is celebrated in style with dancers and parades given a fitting soundtrack by the traditional Castellers. One of the best features of this event is the free entry many of the city’s museums offer.
Cavalcades dels Reis Mags (Three Kings Day)
Celebrated on the 6th January, this is the celebration of the day that the three wise men arrived in Bethlehem. In Spain, the three kings play a similar role to that of Father Christmas in our country, so the day is a source of much
excitement for the city’s young population. This is a popular religious celebration in Barcelona.
Diada de Sant Jordi (St George's Day)
St George is one of the main saints in the eyes of the Spanish, and although he is not the patron saint as he is here in England, this day is still celebrated with great enthusiasm. This day goes by the name 'Diada de Sant Jordi' in Barcelona and this translates to St George's Day in English. St George was the Patron Saint of many countries and regiosn worldwide, including England and Catalonia.
Festa Major de Sant Roc
During this period the streets of Barcelona fill with sound, dance and lights as people join together in celebration if their religion.
