Guide to Sitges Carnival

Sitges Carnival

Many tourists eager to discover the delights of Sitges should visit the city during carnival time. Sitges Carnival is an exciting event, full of light, colour and action, and both visitors and residents join in to celebrate this festival in the second and third weeks of February every year. Sitges Carnival attracts more than 250,000 visitors with more people joining in the week-long street celebrations with every year.

The carnival begins on ‘Jueves Lardero’ (Fat Tuesday) when people enjoy a feast of local dishes and then the carnival King arrives at La Sitges CarnivalFragata with his entourage and goes along the Psg de la Ribera and Espanya to Can Bota Park. Here, Sitges Carnival Queen is selected and then the Carnival King moves on to the Town Hall, where he makes a speech called the Predicot to the assembled crowds.

There are many  parades and processions that feature dozens of colourful floats and thousands of costumed people. Conga lines, plenty of food and drink, music and merrymaking are all part of Sitges Carnival celebrations. The burial of a sardine effigy on Ash Wednesday marks the end of the carnival.

Getting to Sitges for the carnival is easy as there are regular buses and trains from Barcelona, which is only 40 kilometres away, and there is no lack of choice when it comes to Barcelona hotel accommodation
