Barcelona International Marathon

The Barcelona Marathon (or the Marato Barcelona as it is known locally) is a full length marathon race and one which attracts runners from around the world to Barcelona, in the month of March every year. The event gives sports enthusiasts the unique opportunity to view the spectacular sights of Barcelona while running through its streets.

The Barcelona Marathon, which came into existence in the late seventies under the name of the “Catalunya Marathon,” also presents shorter marathon events of 5 kilometres and 10 kilometres, which share their start and finish lines and their courses with the main marathon.

The Marato Barcelona normally commences at 8:30 a.m., with the start and finish line of the marathon race located at the Placa d’Espanya, which is situated at the foot of Montjuic. The course goes Barcelona marathon runnerthrough Camp Nou, the Sagrada Familia, the old city and the shoreline before heading back to Placa d’Espanya.

Barcelona also organises a number of activities in association with this event. A small exhibition is usually held at the starting point of the marathon, giving the participants a chance to meet and socialise. An annual Pasta Party is also held a day before the marathon and everybody, even those who are not participating in the Marato Barcelona, are invited to the four kilometre breakfast run which is held just before the major race. Those interested must register for the event well in advance.
