Barcelona Metro subway network

Barcelona Metro (Undergound)

The public transport system in Barcelona relies heavily on the presence of the Barcelona Metro network. The need for this subway was established in the year 1971 and a large part of the network was laid out by the year 1979. As it stands today, the Barcelona Metro subway has a total of seven metro lines and a number of suburban and other train lines, which are a part of the National train network. These trains transport thousands of people to and from Metro trains in BarcelonaBarcelona on a daily basis.

The Metro is a part of the mass transit public transport system of the city and provides its passengers with over 80 kilometres of electrified rail which run underground in the metropolitan areas. There are two lines that are currently being constructed, which means that the total number of lines in the system is 11. There are to be more additions in the next few years, including 2 extra lines as well as 50 kilometres of subway lines.

The metro system in Barcelona is highly reliable, with most trains arriving and departing on time. During peak hours, the trains heading towards the city centre tend to be a little crowded, but not unduly so. All the metro lines are air-conditioned, which means that passengers will be able to travel in comfort. Passengers can purchase tickets for a single trip, or opt to get a weekly passes or monthly passes.
